Know your gear
The docking connector for most of the Latitude E-series systems is towards the middle of the system's backend. But, for specific Latitude notebooks, the docking connector is located towards the edge of the backend of the system. Docking spacer is required to dock your system in the right position. It is recommended that you use the docking spacer only for systems mentioned in the compatibility list.

Must-have accessory for Dell Mobile Workstation
Helps properly locate my mobile workstation to the dock. The connector on the laptop is at the very edge of the bottom of the machine. Without the spacer, it's difficult to line up the computer connector with the one on the docking station.

Never Heard of It
I read this Latitude E-Docking Spacer is “required for compatible models” but there is no compatibility link.

Works great for E5470 laptops
I wish there was just a new docking station for these newer laptops, but in the meantime, this spacer does fit the bill.

Why? Because the Dock is poorly designed...
This spacer is a paperweight that Dell decided to incorporate into their Docks. A piece of wood (stained nicely, or with your child's/children's picture printed on it) would work just as well and cost considerably-less. That said, the Dock that it fits in looks truly ugly without a spacer. I've had several Management personnel purchase the dock, and all agree that a spacer is required. So, it is useful for its purpose.
